Technical Tuesday: How to get more followers

I wrote this post as a guest post on Blogshareconnect and thought it was worth posting here as well.

I started my blog last year so technically I am still a newbie, learning the ropes on how to blog and the top of mind question for me lately has been how to get more followers? If you are newbie like me, you will know how exciting it is when you check your blog and see you have a new follower – every single person that follows you want to find them and give them a hug and thank them so much for thinking you were worthy enough for a follow.

For the this first Technical Tuesday post I bring you a very informational post on “How to get more followers” –Keep in mind I am not an expert, but this is what I have found is working for me:

  1. I recently switched from BlogSpot to Word Press, it was preference thing. I found BlogSpot limiting and Word Press has made it easier for people to follow my blog. Problem was I was worried I would lose the existing followers I had on BlogSpot if I moved. It’s actually pretty easy to avoid. I amended my feed burner account and redirected my BlogSpot account to Word Press and voila, I have kept my old followers intact. This is a really good article that shows you step by step how to do this. The most important note is DO NOT DELETE YOUR OLD BLOGSPOT BLOG! Just redirect it to your new one!
  2. Join I joined Bloglovin, and claimed my blog as my own. At the moment I only have 39 followers on Bloglovin but I am hoping this increases. This is a great article on how to use bloglovin to get more followers.
  3. I link my posts to my Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Bloglovin – so EVERYONE sees my posts. The aim is to get retweets, likes and clicks-through to my posts this way. If people like your content enough, the idea is the more stuff they see that interests them; they will subscribe and follow you. If all goes to plan that is, you should get more followers.
  4. Pinterest, I am not sure if this is really working but the idea is if you increase your followers on pinterest, then it may spill over to your blog.

So this is what I am working on, to try and get more followers! Granted, I still have a fair bit left to do, but it is working. Remember you still need to put in time on your posts, making them read worthy of your followers to keep your followers. I hope this has helped and been informative – and made you want to follow me, right?

Thinking Out Loud Thursdays #5: I workout because…

I stumbled across this pic on Google and I thought it may be a way to motivate me into running and working out if I thought about all the reasons why I run and workout.

1. It relieves my stress. Stress from work, life, home, family… whatever it might be, I always feel like I can tackle any mountain after I work out.

2. It makes me happy. Truthfully I am always smiling after a workout, even a bad workout is still a workout.

3. It helps me stay fit and healthy.

4. It challenges me to push myself to succeed.

5. It makes me stronger, builds my strength and confidence.

6. It helps me sleep better.

7. It helps with my flexibility and toning.

8. I can eat without guilt.

9. It lets me fit into my own skin and clothes more comfortably.

What motivates you? Why do you work out?

Get Your Sh!t Together September!

Following Ash’s lead, welcome to the first day of September which will now be referred to as “Get Your Shit Together” September (#GYSTS)!

GYSTS14Its the first day of spring here and summer is fast approaching, so its a perfect time to get your shit together! Plus this is the month that I run my FIRST HALF MARATHON – can you feel the excitement? The nerves are certainly kicking in!

So how am I getting my shit together?? Here is how:

1. Run – Run your day your way. I am taking this literally, by running A LOT. Also I am going to be in charge of my days/weeks and month by running my day and staying in check with all my goals.

while you were sleeping i was running2. Breathe – Don’t sweat the small stuff. I am going to not stress out about things that are totally beyond my control.

enjoy the little things3. Listen – Listen to my body and rest when I need to, but also listen to the advice from my support group as well. This is something I take for granted. I need to listen and take other people’s advice sometimes!

4. Health – Looking after my body and my health. Running looks after my fitness and body but I also need to watch what I eat. After my 21days no cheats experiment I realise how often I crave unhealthy food and how I need to curb these cravings by eating the right food at the right time.

5. Happiness – After my 21km, Rob and I are taking some time off work to have a bit of a holiday and relax at the end of September so this will be a great reward to look forward to. My happy place is with him.

So how what are you goals this September?

Week 9 of 12 Half Marathon Training

This week I didn’t do so great, but I didn’t totally suck either. I ended up running 3 days just not the total mileage I was aiming for, ended up with 12km, with 16km scheduled for tomorrow. I tried a cross fitness training class on Tuesday – it was a HIIT workout and it totally worked muscles I never realized I had. I am hoping to add this at least once a week going forward. I didn’t get round to RPM or Bodypump this week but that’s not really a biggie for me, what bums me out is my lack of improvement on my running.

Lately I have not really been enjoying my training to be honest with you. I kinda feel like I am over it really, I cant really be over it because I am committed to running the 21km but I dunno how much running I am going to be doing, lately its been a lot of walk/running. Truthfully it feels like this is the most I have walked my entire running career (ok so career is a big word for one year but you get my point).

I really feel I am capable of more. So I am trying to keep myself motivated, keep my eye on my first half marathon prize.

This week I will be doing the following work outs:

Monday: 5km run; Bodypump
Tuesday: Rest Day
Wednesday: Cross Fitness Class; 12km Run
Thursday: Rest Day
Friday: 3km run
Saturday: Rest Day
Sunday: 16km Run

What is your plan for this week? How do you keep yourself motivated? Are you enjoying your runs?

Thinking Out Loud Thursdays #4: Random Questions

I am busy going through a bunch of ideas for blog posts and I came across a few random ideas that actually would work perfectly as random questions everyone would love to know about me… so here goes, my very first Random Questions:

1. What do you wish you would have gone to college for?

I wish I had gone to Chef School. I had thought about it, and it was a definite contender when I was just out of school all I wanted to do was be a pastry chef.

35_Restaurant_PastryChef_xxxlarge2. If you had a super power, what would it be and why?

Aside from every runners dream to run fast, I would actually like to be able to travel in time, I would love to see what the future holds. Does that sound as cheesy as it sounds in my head?

3. My favourite animal and why

My first teddy was a Panda Bear and I have always loved Panda’s since then. But my favourite animal is also a Giraffe, I have always loved how tall they are and how long their legs are because they are similar to me 🙂

giraffepanda4. My First Car was

It was a Morris Minor, 1951 classic model with all original features. I had it for 2 weeks before it broke down and we had to sell it (it wasn’t a sensible student car to have really).

1951-morris-minor5. Your favorite smell

I love the smell of rain. Also freshly baked cookies.

6. If someone offered you one free cosmetic alteration, which would it be and why

I would want to fix the funny pigmentation I have on my face… its something that does bother me sometimes.

7. Favorite Childhood Teacher

Miss Russell, She was my English teacher in High School. She encouraged my love for poetry and creative writing.

8. You have been given R1,000,000.00 to use as you wish, however you can not keep any of it. Who would you give the money to?

My parents, my nephew and Robert – without a second thought.

9. What’s your worst date ever?

I once went on a date with a guy I met online who ordered what I ate and drank during the date and then made me pay half. If I am honest the thing that most upset me was that on top of all of that he was shorter than me. I called my mum as soon as I got into the car and cried saying I would never meet anyone worth a dam. A little over a year later I started dating Rob 🙂

10. If you lost all of your belongings in a fire, what would you miss most?

My photographs. I would hate to lose all those!

Now its your turn, answer these Random Questions!

Worldless Wednesday {Link Up}

I loved the idea behind Wordless Wednesday, get the full details here. Often I think I ramble and talk too much. So this post will allow me to post a pic or image that speaks for itself. It will be based on what is going on in my life, how I am feeling etc.

Week 8 of 12 Half Marathon Training

This week flew past, no seriously!? Can you believe we are coming to the end of August?

I have a few things to recap on, in terms of my training, I ran all my runs this week (total of 40km) but didn’t make it to Bodypump on Monday. I am super chuffed at all the running I did though!

be a better runnerToday is also my last of the #21daysnocheats challenge. True to my honesty on this blog… I bombed this week at the #21daysnocheats challenge. I had dessert two nights this week. So I made it up to 16days without a cheat. I think what this challenge showed was that I have A LOT of sugar cravings during the day, and that when I cut out sugar I have learnt to eat better, healthier options to curb my cravings. I gave in and had pudding when we went out for dinner at a friends place twice this week. I have no regrets about it these 2 cheats. I had a healthy few days (19 days in total) and I enjoyed my little cheats too.

Right so going into week 9 of my training, what do I have planned:

Monday: Rest Day
Tuesday: 5km run; Functional Training Teaser at work; RPM
Wednesday: Rest Day
Thursday: 10km run; Bodypump
Friday: 3km run
Saturday: Rest Day
Sunday: 10km Wanderers run followed by 6km run to make it 16km on one day.

What is your plan for this week?

Thinking Out Loud Thursdays #3: The Story Of Jack

On this fine Thursday in Joburg I am pondering various arb thoughts. Not sure what Thinking Out Loud Thursdays are about? Check out here.

Are you a Dog or a Cat person?

Take this quiz here. Such a funny blog post from a friend of mine. This post got me thinking about how I am very much a dog person. I dislike cats a lot. Its a weird and not so wonderful story. See my mum is highly allergic to cats so we never had a cat growing up. They are very unfamiliar to me, hence I don’t really like them. But I also have never met a friendly cat. I have met angry, bitchy, bossy, stuck up and just plain mean cats instead. So I guess you could say, they started my dislike really. I have mentioned it before but basically Rob and I bought a house so we could get a pet.

Rob never had a dog growing up, so he was a big kid about it and wanted a dog desperately. We wanted (still want) a Lab but our little garden is just not big enough for a big dog so we looked at various smaller breeds. Breeds with a bit of personality and unlimited cuteness. It was down to three breeds in the end: Pug, Boston Terrier or French Bulldog. A friend contacted me early Jan this year and told me about a breeder selling Pug puppies and so with that, the decision was made.

Jack 4 weeks
We chose Jack when he was just 4 weeks old. well, he chose us really. He was the biggest in the litter and he stood on his brothers and sisters heads to get to us. Rob reached out and picked him up and it was love at first sight. He was slightly darker in colouring than his other fawn brothers and sisters. We just knew he was the one for us.

Jack and Rob

So we chose him then had to wait an agonizing 2 weeks till he had his shots and could safely leave his mommy. In the meantime we came up with his name. His name is two fold really. On the one side he is named after an Arsenal soccer player, Jack Wilshire. And secondly, he is named after my nanny noo -noo (my Canadian Grandma), Jackie.

Jack and DadWe picked him up on a Tuesday, in a box with a Teddy and an old t shirt that had his mom’s smell on. From day one he had our hearts and he owned the house. He has more toys than some kids!

Jack and his toysI have also been doing the proper mummy thing to do and documenting his months with us. Each month on the 20th he gets a pic and a shout out.

6months of jack 7 monthsYesterday was his 8 months B-Day. Anyway, this is just a random post about how much I love my pug child Jack. Happy Birthday little guy, you are so very much loved. X

Jack 8 months

So are you a dog or a cat person? Do you treat your pet like your fur child?

Confessions of a Runner

Following a blog post from Francesca I decided to write some of my own Running Confessions. I realised I could relate to a lot of hers and thought it would be fun to add some of my own:

  • Lately I have had a lot of “bad run” days.
  • After signing up for my first 21km and following a training plan, I realise I don’t like following a running plan and much prefer just running when I feel like it.
  • I never really been fond of my feet, but since I have been running more, my toenails are in need of a pedi badly!
  • I can’t “eat whatever I want” just because I run. In fact if I am running I need to be super careful what I eat so that it doesn’t come back to haunt me on my run.
  • I wish I ran faster. Don’t all runners feel the same here?
  • I cough, sneeze and blow my nose while I run. It’s super sexy (not really).
  • I love my sleep but somehow getting up to run is the most exhilarating/productive part of my weekend.
  • I have massive piles of laundry each week- all of it consisting of running gear.
  • Gastrointestinal issues are a norm.
  • If I am stuck in traffic in my car, I will work out how fast it would take me to run the same distance.
  • I always feel like I have accomplished so much more in my weekend if I get a long run in.
  • Coffee must be drank after a long run, never before.
  • I secretly judge peoples’ running shoes. This is now since I have a strong pronation shoe, I envy the neutral runners.
  • I’m always kind of hungry. I am not sure this is related to my running.
  • Runners who are faster than me while pushing strollers and/or walking piss me off.
  • I have internal wars with other runners. Generally it is a speed walker or grandpa that I am chasing during a run.
  • Clicking submit on an online race registration is the most exciting part of entering. Then the planning begins.
  • The night before a race, I generally don’t sleep well, no matter what time I go to bed.
  • I fear having to go to the bathroom during a race. This is after a bad experience at the Nike Night Race in 2013. We don’t need to go there again but it was bad. I have nightmares that it will happen again.
  • Running is an instant way to make me angry that I don’t run fast and happy that I ran all at the same time. It’s a love/hate thing.

Whats your biggest Running Confession?
